Upmarket hospital denies charge of discrimination against gay employee

Representatives of several civic organizations brought with them a document signed by 23,000 supporters of Delgado.

Hospital officials refused to receive the document and ordered private security guards to block the entrance to the building. According to demonstrators, an automatic lawn watering system was activated in a bid to get them to move away. When this failed, hospital officials called the police and a public notary, who demanded they leave the premises or face forced eviction.

A spokesperson for Puerta de Hierro had previously denied that Delgado was dismissed because of her sexual preference, although he failed to provide any other strong reason as to why a model employee was suddenly let go.

For María Guadalupe Ramos Ponce, Jalisco coordinator for the Latin American and Caribbean Committee for the Defense of Women’s Rights (Cladem), there is little doubt that Delgado Luevano was the victim of discrimination.  She said the hospital had violated the Mexican Constitution and needs to apologize to their former employee, as well as send their staff on courses in human rights.

The 23, 512 signatures were collected at the website www.change.org.

A second protest was staged outside the hospital on Wednesday of this week. Meanwhile, a doctor with a private clinic at the hospital has found work for Delgado on her front desk.
