US funds help equip city’s Women’s Justice Center

Inaugurated this week by Jalisco Governor Aristoteles Sandoval, the center boasts offices of several state agencies, including the Family Development Agency (DIF), the Attorney General’s Office, the Labor and Health Departments and the Forensic Sciences Institute.

The courtroom at the center has been set up with money from the Merida Initiative, the U.S. foreign aid package launched in 2008 to provide funding and support to disrupt the capacity of organized crime to operate in Mexico and institutionalize the country’s capacity to sustain the rule of law.  Funds from the 2.1-billion-dollar program support the modification of courtrooms for oral trials, as well as provide technical expertise and assistance to Mexico for police professionalization, judicial and prison reform, information technology enhancement, infrastructure development, border security, and the promotion of a culture of lawfulness.

Attending the opening of the Centro de Justicia this week, U.S. Consul General in Guadalajara Susan Abeyta commented that it was “an honor to contribute to such an important effort.”

The Centro de Justicia para las Mujeres is located on Calle Alvaro Alcalzar, one block from Circumvalacion Division del Norte.
