Regional milk producers staged an unusual protest by giving and throwing away almost 5,000 liters of the product in Guadalajara Thursday.
The demonstration against the government’s trade policies was held in the parking lot of the Walmart store at Avenida Niños Heroes and 16 de Septiembre, and also the involved burning of 30 cartons of dried milk.
President of the National Front of Milk Consumers and Producers Alvaro Gonzalez Muñoz explained that producers are upset that so much domestic milk goes to waste because of foreign imports.
“The government allows the widespread importation of dried and skimmed milk products, that appear to be milk, but are not,” he said.
According to some sources, around 400,000 liters of milk goes unsold each day in Mexico and has to be thrown away.
Upon seeing that the demonstrators were pouring away milk in the parking lot, many people arrived with jugs and containers to collect it and take it home.
