Guadalajara funeral for wrestler who died from fatal blow

The ceremony took place amid reports that death threats had been aimed at former WWE wrestling star Oscar Gutierrez, alias Rey Mysterio Jr., whose fly-kick led to Aguayo’s death.

Aguayo’s father, the legendary Mexican wrestler Pedro Aguayo Ramirez, refused to speak to press at the funeral, while a statement from his mother questioned the medical treatment her 35-year-old son received after the incident.

Aguayo died during an AAA wrestling event at a municipal auditorium in Tijuana. He fell unconscious on the ropes after receiving the fatal kick. The bout continued for almost two minutes before the other participants and the referee realized the wrestler was seriously injured and required urgent medical attention.

Paramedics treated Aguayo in the ring but after being taken to a nearby hospital he was pronounced dead in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The Baja California state prosecutor’s office said that the cause of death was trauma to the neck and a cervical fracture. The office has now opened an investigation into possible manslaughter.

The Tijuana Wrestling and Boxing Commission said the incident was “unfortunate” but were satisfied with the response of medical staff.

“The reaction for medical attention was quick, in my opinion,” said Commission President Juan Carlos Pelayo.

Aguayo had been wrestling in Mexico’s “Lucha Libre” circuit for over 20 years.

News outlets have reported that Rey Mysterio Jr. received a number of death threats following the incident, with some fans blaming him for Aguayo’s death.

Nevertheless, Aguayo’s parents have asked people not to blame him for the tragedy and even invited him to be one of the pallbearers at their son’s funeral.
