After almost six months in operation in the downtown core of Guadalajara, the program has 3,400 signed-up subscribers, who make on average just over 1,000 rides per day.
The city center program was set up with a capacity for 8,600 rides a day.
State Transportation Director Felipe Reyes Lara believes the numbers will increase with the expansion of the second phase of the project in November. He points out that the rhythm of growth of Mi Bici is outpacing Mexico City’s similar EcoBici program.
Closer study of the public bike program statistics shows much reduced use of the bicycles at weekends. Friday, March 6 recorded the highest single daily use: 1,578 trips; Sunday, March 15 the lowest: 158.
No thefts of bikes have been reported; 676 riders have faced penalties for using the bikes for longer than their permitted time and only one bike has been written off in an accident, authorities report.
