Late last year, Enamorado received what she was told were the ashes of her son Oscar, who disappeared in 2013. Authorities believed they found his body in a mass grave although it was badly decomposed. No DNA testing was carried out but the FGA nonetheless identified the body as probably that of Enamorado’s son and decided to cremate the body without consulting the family. They subsequently asked Enamorado to collect the ashes.
The National Network of Human Rights Organizations, together with participants from the Iteso University’s institutional human rights program, has noted that the FGE is violating protocols that call for the bodies of unidentified persons to be buried and not cremated.
The groups’ petition also seeks assurances from Jalisco authorities that the bodies of people who have not been identified and who could have “disappeared” be kept in storage until they are identified through scientific methods.
