Hundreds of bus drivers piloting their vehicles blocked the Periferico during the May 1 holiday, calling for a fare hike they see as only fair, considering the rising cost of, among other things, of gas.
The drivers snarled traffic along several kilometers of the city beltway in the course of their hours-long protest, starting around 7 a.m. at the turn off to Lake Chapala. Banners pinned to buses read “Increases in cost of transportation are huge. It’s urgent that fares go up!”
The demonstration, meant initially to only occupy two lanes of traffic, soon took over the third and left-most lane, causing long backups on the Periferico.
