Rodolfo Velarde, the police officer who was set alight by a protestor during a demonstration in the city center on June 4, has been honored for his service by Guadalajara City Hall.
The shocking video of Velarde catching fire was swiftly disseminated around the world through social media.
Velarde was one of 22 distinguished municipal police officers recognized at a ceremony held last Monday at City Hall.
The violent downtown protest was provoked by the death of Giovanni Lopez, a bricklayer from Ixtlahuacan, who died from injuries allegedly inflicted while in police custody. Three Ixtlahuacan police officers have been arrested in connection with the case, which is still under investigation.
