Just isolate, don’t bother to get tested

Mexican health authorities and politicians are advising fully vaccinated citizens to assume they are infected with the Omicron variant of Covid-19 if they develop mild, cold-like symptoms, such as a cough, hoarseness, runny nose or body aches.

Many senior officials, including Mexico City Mayor Sheinbaum Pardo, have gone further, saying it is not necessary for people with mild symptoms to take a positivity test for the virus.  She called on employers to refrain from demanding that staff who suspect they are  infected take a mandatory test in order to stay off work, especially in light of the current shortage of tests within the country.

Sheinbaum said symptomatic people without any comorbilities need only to go to a hospital or health clinic if their oxygenation level falls below 90 percent and they have a temperature higher than 38 degrees.

Deputy Health Minister Hugo López-Gatell also asked citizens with symptoms resembling the common cold to stay at home and isolate instead of seeking out tests.
