According to the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), the recent hike in the price of avocado is due to several factors, including inflation, lower avocado production and a growing demand from the United States, leading to domestic shortages.
At this time last year, the price of avocados hovered around 45 pesos per kilo.
Guadalajara supermarkets were selling the fruit this week between 95 and 120 pesos a kilo, while reports indicated that vendors in some areas of Mexico were asking as much as 150 pesos a kilo.
