Diners at a restaurant and a cafe in the upscale Puerto de Hierro commercial complex dived under tables and covered their children with their bodies when a criminal gang exchanged gunfire with the bodyguards of a kidnapping target just yards from where they were enjoying relaxing Sunday afternoon meals.
Soldiers that happened to be patrolling the zone heard the gunfire and responded immediately, starting a shootout with the gunmen as they tried to flee. Two of the gang members were injured in the confrontation and were detained, official reports said.
After the shooting, which lasted around three minutes, authorities confirmed the death of a bodyguard, plus injuries to at least six people, including several innocent civilians.
The incident began when the gunmen attacked the occupants of a vehicle on Paseo de los Virreyes, beside the Landmark Mall, which faces the Plaza Andares.
