Even though Guadalajara is hosting the Gay Games in November and has been described by The New York Times, no less, as a city that “celebrates diversity,” the metropolitan area has an uncomfortably high rate of attacks on the LGBTIQ+ community.
Data from Amicus, an organization baed in Leon, Guanajuato that catalogues and reports incidents of violence and discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people, notes that 91 “violent incidents” of this kind occurred in Jalisco last year, 41 of which were in the Guadalajara metropolitan area. Of these, 53.6 percent occurred in public spaces such as parks, government offices, public transportation units and hospitals, Amicus says.
