A surge in “vishing” has forced Citibanamex to post warnings on its clients’ online account pages about ongoing telephone scams.
Several Banamex clients have told this newspaper of phony “executives” calling to inform them of an unauthorized credit card transaction, and the necessary steps that should subsequently be taken to remedy the situation.
The well-spoken and professional sounding scammers appear highly believable, but suspicions should be raised as soon as they ask for any kind of personal information. The main aim of these criminals is to get their targets to divulge online or cellphone banking details and passwords.
Citibanamex urges its clients to hang up immediately, and report the attempted fraud to 55-1226-2639, providing the number used to make the call, if possible.
Although unconfirmed, some reports suggest these scammers may have previously worked in banks, perhaps some of them at Citibanamex, where personal information on clients, including their telephone numbers and account details, has been stolen.
