Downtown’s renovated below-ground mall reopens

As he stepped away from his job this week to kick start his campaign for the governorship of Jalisco, Mayor Pablo Lemus helped cut the ribbon at the renovated mall beneath the city center’s Plaza Guadalajara, while also announcing a couple of new attractions/projects that should see the light of day in the coming months.

pg2aThe area beneath the Plaza Guadalajara—facing the Palacio Municipal and Cathedral—was converted from a car park into a mall several decades ago. The idea was for micro-entrepreneurs to rent small spaces to sell their merchandise. Unfortunately, the mall was never popular with the public and failed to take off, mostly due to the labyrinth-like and claustrophobic ambiance.

Several failed revamps and a period of semi-abandonment later, this new reiteration of the mall has a better chance of success, city fathers believe. This is because the greater part of the space has been given over to services rather than sales booths (locales), which now number 150 instead of 350.
