Gangs targeting cops; Zapopan head honcho is the latest victim

The deputy operational director of the Zapopan municipal police force was shot to death on Monday, November 13 as he was about to enter a cafe at the busy corner of Avenida Patria and Beethoven in the middle-class La Estancia neighborhood.

The target, 27-year police veteran Carlos Flores Amezcua, is the 22nd police officer in the state of Jalisco to be murdered in the past 12 months, according to various sources.

Surveillance video from the Ganik Cafe released on social media shows exactly how the carefully planned and brazen assassination unfolded.

In the video, two couples are seen sitting at separate tables in the cafe’s small outside terrace facing Avenida Patria. Moments after Flores walks past them and goes to open the glass door to the cafe, all four—two men and two women—jump up, draw weapons they had concealed in their laps, and fire off multiple shots hitting the police commander in the back. As Flores reels onto the terrace, falling on his back, one of the assailants fires several more shots at the victim at point-blank range. The quartet then quickly ran off out of the range of the cafe’s cameras.
