Soccer champions

America of Mexico City, the nation’s wealthiest soccer team, won its 14th Mexican championship Sunday, defeating Tigres of Monterey in the Liga Mx final by an aggregate score of 3-0.  No team has won more titles than America; the Guadalajara Chivas are second on the list with 12 championships.

Investigation stalled?

The three-year anniversary of the murder of former Jalisco Governor Aristóteles Sandoval, who was shot to death in a Puerto Vallarta bar in 2020, was marked this week with a mass at the San Juan Macías church in Guadalajara. Family members criticized the investigation into the case, saying that although the perpetrators of the crime have been identified from surveillance video, no arrests have been made, nor have authorities given any explanation as to the motive for the hit, or who may have ordered it.

Morelos retired

Banknote collectors (notaphilists) might want to hang on to one of the 50-peso bills bearing the image of Mexican independence hero José María Morelos y Pavón which have started to be withdrawn from circulation.  Also being retired are the 200- and 500-peso bills with the images of poet Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz and Ignacio Zaragoza (he defeated the mighty French Army in 1862) that were issued in the 1990s and the early 2000s.

GDL to Tulum

On January 16, two weeks after the opening of the new Tulum Airport, Viva Aerobus launched three weekly flights from Guadalajara to the Caribbean resort destination, flying on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.  The inauguration of the airport coincides with the opening of the Mayan train route connecting the resort town of Tulum in the state of Quintana Roo to many other destinations in the Yucatan peninsula and southern Mexico. Meanwhile, Air Canada announced that flights from Toronto and Montreal to Tulum will begin May 3, 2024, and JetBlue says it will operate flights from JFK in New York to Tulum, starting in June next year.

Charros in playoff frame

A remarkable turnaround in fortunes in the second half of the Mexican Pacific League (LMP) season has put the Charros de Jalisco on the cusp of qualifying for the playoffs, which begin in January. The 68-game regular season is split into two halves, after which points awarded for league positions are added up from both halves to determine the playoff picture. After finishing bottom of the league table in the first half of the season, the Charros lie second in the standings in the second half, with a 14-7 win/loss record as of December 18. This puts the Charros back in the playoff picture.   The Charros will complete their regular season home schedule with a three-game series against the Yaquis of Obregon Thursday and Friday, December 28 and 29, 7:30 p.m.; and Saturday, December 30, 6 p.m.  See boletomovil.com.mx for tickets.
