Construction of city’s largest museum will move forward in 2024

The construction part of the University of Guadalajara’s unfinished Museum of Environmental Sciences (Museo de Ciencias Ambientales), the most expensive museum ever to be built in Guadalajara, is likely to be completed next year after the state legislature recently approved Jalisco Governor Enrique Alfaro’s 2024 budget.

Rector Ricardo Villanueva said the 2024 budget allocates 501 million pesos ($US29 million) to the public university for the “development of various educational infrastructure works,” of which 200 million could be assigned to the museum, as long as the university’s council is in agreement.

Even if work on the museum restarts, its immediate opening is unlikely, as the money would only cover the physical construction and not work on interior furnishings or exhibition content, which will require significantly more funding, Villanueva said.
