Luz del Mundo leader mired in more trouble

The Guadalajara-based Luz del Mundo Church and its jailed leader, Naasón Joaquín García, is under investigation by the New York Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) office for money laundering and possible cases of human trafficking, according to a report in the Mexican daily Milenio.

HSI is the principal investigative arm of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, responsible for investigating transnational crime and threats, specifically those criminal organizations that exploit the global infrastructure through which international trade, travel and finance move.  Joaquín García is currently serving a 16-year sentence in a California state prison for sexual assault against minors. The Milenio report says he may now face federal charges for the production and possession of child pornography, derived from a series of videos and images obtained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation on his electronic devices when he was detained at Los Angeles International Airport in June 2019.
