A local NGO has the lofty goal of donating five million trees over the next decade, aiming to make Guadalajara theis country’s most “tree-rich” (#LaMásArbolada) city.
“Our goal for 2024 is to plant 365,000 trees, at a rate of one thousand every day,” says Miguel Rodríguez, manager of Bosque Urbano de Extra. “Our goal is to have one tree for every inhabitant.”
Says Rodríguez: “The United Nations and environmental organizations are urging people to plant trees, not only in protected natural areas, but also in our gardens, patios, even our garages.”
According to cities4forests.com, the definition of an urban forest includes trees in “yards, along streets and utility corridors, in protected areas, and in watersheds, including individual trees, street trees, green spaces with trees, and even the associated vegetation and the soil beneath the trees.”
Environmental experts say reforestation and increasing the density of trees in Guadalajara will reduce the number of “heat islands” springing up throughout the densely populated metropolis.
