For the first time in its history, the University of Guadalajara (UdeG)—Mexico’s second-largest public university—will be led by a female rector.
The General University Council (CGU) last week selected Karla Alejandrina Planter Pérez as the 51st person to hold this position since the Real (Royal) Universidad de Guadalajara — the institution’s precursor — was founded in 1792.
Planter holds a master’s degree in Political and Social Studies from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and has worked at the UdeG for over three decades. Her most recent post was rector of the university’s campus in Tepatitlán de Morelos (CUAltos).
In addition to her academic leadership, she has been a prominent figure in local media, presenting a news program for over 15 years on UdeG Channel 44 and its radio networks. She also served as executive coordinator of the FIL (International Book Fair) Academic Program.
