Local groups slam Trump’s Gaza vision

Members of the Committee of Solidarity with Palestine staged protests in Guadalajara on March 5 in response to statements by U.S. President Donald Trump, who has suggested that the United States should “take over” and “own” the Gaza Strip once the Israel-Hamas conflict has ended.

pg1cOn March 4, Arab leaders adopted Egypt’s US$53 billion reconstruction plan for Gaza, which aims to rebuild the enclave without displacing Palestinians—contrasting with Trump’s vision of a “Middle East Riviera.” The plan was welcomed by Hamas but rejected by Israel and the United States, which both oppose Hamas’ continued presence in Gaza.

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi emphasized that the proposal focuses on restoring dignity to Palestinians, outlining an initial recovery phase followed by a reconstruction period lasting until 2030.

Trump has argued that the forced displacement of Gaza’s entire population to neighboring countries would offer them a better life. Critics, however, argue that such a move would amount to ethnic cleansing.

In Guadalajara, protestors painted a huge sign at the foot of the Niños Heroes glorieta, calling for respect for Palestinian sovereignty, before marching to the state governor’s residence, Casa Jalisco. There, they urged the governor to sever relations with Israel.

The demonstration concluded with a rally and protest at the recently opened U.S. Consulate General facility in Colonia Monraz.
