The Guadalajara Zoo has been officially recognized by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), a nonprofit organization that accredits facilities in the United States and worldwide.
AZA’s mission is to promote wildlife conservation, education and research by ensuring that zoos and aquariums operate in a scientifically sound, ethical manner, with a strong focus on animal welfare.
This five-year accreditation allows the Guadalajara Zoo to join an international network dedicated to conservation and environmental education, opening the door to collaborations with other accredited institutions. It also underscores the zoo’s commitment to research and knowledge exchange aimed at preserving endangered species.
AZA-accredited facilities are held to high standards for animal care, staff training, visitor education, and conservation efforts. These institutions also participate in breeding programs designed to conserve endangered species and contribute to field-based conservation projects around the globe.
Representing over 250 institutions worldwide, AZA establishes rigorous standards to ensure the proper care of animals in human care. Fewer than ten percent of wildlife institutions in the United States meet these requirements, highlighting the significance of this prestigious accreditation.
Currently, AZA-accredited zoos and aquariums house more than 800,000 animals, all under strict professional handling protocols.
