Mayor Veronica Delgadillo launched a new initiative this week aimed at planting 20,000 new trees across the municipality, boldly declaring that her plan marks the first step toward transforming Guadalajara into the “greenest city in Mexico.”
Environmentalists have long criticized metro Guadalajara mayors for their inconsistent tree planting and maintenance efforts. Abel Ruiz Velasco Castañeda, a professor in the Department of Geography and Territorial Planning at the University of Guadalajara (UdeG), recently warned about a city-wide deficit of 240,000 trees, largely attributed to uncontrolled urban growth.
