Visiting Zapopan Centro is always a delightful experience, but there’s an extra reason to enjoy it on Sunday, June 29: the first Municipal Tejuino Fair. Held in the expansive Plaza de Las Américas, facing the Basilica, the fair will feature over a dozen of Guadalajara’s most renowned producers of this iconic and refreshing drink.
Tejuino, a Jalisco classic, is a cold, fermented corn drink with origins dating back to pre-Hispanic times. Corn kernels are ground, then boiled, sweetened with molasses, and given a deep yellow coloring. This mixture, known as tesquil, is then left to ferment for one day. The finished tejuino is served by blending the tesquil with lime juice, a spoonful of salt, and topping it off with homemade lime sorbet. The result is a surprisingly fresh, tart-flavored drink that is thick, icy, and refreshingly cool.
The fair will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with municipal organizers promising “música, antojitos y mucho sabor local” (music, snacks, and loads of local flavor).
