The heroic aura that once surrounded local soccer player Javier “Chicharito” Hernández is beginning to fade fast.
The 37-year-old Chivas player has found himself at the center of a storm—not only for his below-par on-field performances, but for social media posts described by many Mexicans as sexist and chauvinistic.
In a recent video, Mexico’s all-time leading goalscorer sparked condemnation by questioning the role of women in “eradicating masculinity” and fostering a “hypersensitive society.”
“Women, you are failing ... many of us are wanting to love you, care for you, respect you, and provide for you. However, you have to learn to honor masculinity,” he said.
