Javier “Chicharito” Hernández, star player for Guadalajara Chivas and the record goalscorer for the national team, has been fined by the Mexican Football Federation (FMF) for sexist comments posted on his Instagram. The 37-year-old soccer player sparked outrage after promoting harmful gender stereotypes, claiming women were “eradicating masculinity” by not doing housework.
The two controversial videos, which have each garnered over 200,000 likes, went viral, leading to widespread backlash. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum condemned the remarks, calling them “very sexist,” and emphasized the importance of recognizing women as equals.
Chivas and Hernández’s sponsor, Puma, distanced themselves from the comments, stating they did not align with their values. Hernández has since apologized, promising to express himself with greater sensitivity in the future.
