The Irish Embassy in Mexico City conveyed a formal commendation to historian Michael Hogan of Guadalajara this month from President Michael D. Higgins as he ends his second term.
Higgins credits the popular educator and author with making major contributions to understanding, cultural history and friendship between the two nations. This year, as Mexico commemorates its 50th anniversary of relations with Ireland, the president noted that Hogan’s book, “The Irish Soldiers of Mexico,” was instrumental in paving the way for a deeper understanding of the Irish volunteers who fought for Mexican sovereignty and paid the ultimate sacrifice.
