Sunday, March 8, Guadalajara will once again become a focal point for women's rights as feminist collectives take to the streets for International Women's Day.
Under the stark slogan, "México 2026: sede mundial de la violencia contra las mujeres" (Mexico 2026: world headquarters of violence against women), the Frente Feminista de Jalisco is leading one of two major marches scheduled for the afternoon.
The collective is using the upcoming FIFA World Cup as a measuring stick. With current feminicide rates, they estimate that during the 39 days of the tournament, 390 women could be assassinated in Mexico.
The message is a pointed call for authorities to address this issue with the same urgency afforded to security for international visitors.
