With perfect weather conditions and several thousand spectators jammed into the Cruz Azul soccer field to catch the drama, 11 teams of balloon flyers put on a multi-colored spectacle at Ajijic’s traditional Regatta de Globos Saturday, September 12.
After months of work at designing and piecing together the delicate tissue paper balloons, the local globo masters delighted the crowd as they launched around 300 of the peculiar flying vessels crafted in diverse sizes and shapes.
In addition to the conventional tear-drop forms, there were models fashioned into gigantic animals and all sorts of geometric figures, including some adorned with intricate cut-out decorations, banners attached as tails and even a couple of hand-lettered marriage proposals. Thanks to gentle breezes and a strong up-draft, most of the balloons successfully soared high into the air, sailing off over the mountain range to unknown destinations.
