Initial rehabilitation of Chapala’s Parque de la Cristiania is due for completion around the end this month, city officials report.
After years of neglect and little more than basic maintenance, the town’s sprawling recreational park is undergoing renovations that involve repairing the containment wall bordering the lake and improving the waterfront pathway for pedestrians and cyclers, as well as the roofed picnic areas spread around the grounds. New work-out and playground equipment will be installed, and two rest room modules will be built.
The work is being carried out by a private contractor. Jalisco’s Tourism Department is putting up eight million pesos from its budget for sustainable tourism development. The Chapala municipality is contributing an additional two million pesos, primarily to cover local labor.
Although the project is still a far cry from the full-blown amusement park originally envisioned by the local government, the next phase will center on construction of the projected Lake Museum.
