Mezcala fireworks shop goes up in smoke

One employee died instantly and two others were injured in the explosion Tuesday, December 1, around 9 a.m., of a fireworks manufacturing workshop located on the bypass skirting Mezcala de la Asunción.

The blast generated a huge plume of smoke while devastating the workshop, a storage structure and 90 square meters of adjacent land. Personnel from Jalisco’s Civil Protection Unit and municipal firefighters from Poncitlán and Chapala arrived on the scene to extinguish the flames, secure the affected area and inspect the damage.The owner of the pyrotechnic cottage industry appeared later to enquire about the well-being of his employees and assure the Civil Protection rescue teams that the outfit is properly licensed.

The investigation into the cause of the accident, and determination of judicial responsibility for the human and material damages, is now in the hands of the regional branch of the State Prosecutor’s Office.
