SOS Dog Rescue signs pact to support municipal shelter

The SOS Dog Rescue non-profit association and the Chapala government have forged an agreement to maintain operations of the municipality’s Refugio Canino (canine shelter) on a permanent basis.

pg1cThe pact was formalized Wednesday, December 16, at the shelter’s current location on Ajijic’s western outskirts near the BP service station at La Canacinta.

The shelter operates under the auspices of Chapala’s Ecology Department and its Animal Protection Unit.  SOS Dog Rescue and Lakeside Friends of the Animals have been handling donations to foot the bill for the shelter’s development and day-to-day operational costs since its July opening, totaling around 70,000 pesos per month, as well as management of volunteers who work with the animals. The municipality has provided the land, manpower for construction labor and water and electrical services.

The shelter currently houses approximately 40 dogs rescued from abandonment and situations of mistreatment. Another 60 are temporarily cared for in foster homes, while 30 more have been recently placed with adoptive families.
