Statistics collected in the municipality of Chapala during Mexico’s 2020 Census show that 5,384 of its inhabitants were born outside of this country.
The figure represents close to 10 percent of the total populace, now measured at 55,196.
However, these 5,384 folks should not be seen as a yardstick of current residents without Mexican roots, given that some are likely to be Mexican (or U.S.-Mexian) citizens born in the United States and now living in Chapala.

The door-to-door survey was originally scheduled to take place during March, but census-takers assigned by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) suspended their work before the month was out, following the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. The survey was resumed at the end of June, wrapping up the following month.
