A couple from the town of Atotonilquillo will face prosecution on criminal charges in connection with the December 31 death of a 14-month-old infant.
On the basis of investigations carried out by personnel from Chapala’s Regional Prosecutor’s Office, an arrest warrant was issued against the baby’s mother Sofia “G” and her sentimental partner Marcos Alberto “G”. A criminal court judge subsequently ordered that they be bound over for trial.
According to the case file drawn up by prosecutors, the accused were at their place of residence on Calle Hidalgo in Atotonilquillo when they subjected the infant to a violent attack because they were unable to make him stop crying from hunger.
Apparently under the influence of narcotics, they desperately tried to quiet the child by beating him repeatedly, finally throwing him on the floor and causing an instantly fatal skull fracture.
Finding the evidence credible, the judge presiding at a preliminary hearing ruled that the mother is to be tried for parricide while her partner is charged with aggravated homicide. He also ordered that the pair be held for one year of preventive pre-trial detention as a precautionary measure.
