Fixing Ajijic’s water woes

Breakdowns in public water services provided by the Chapala government have become commonplace during this year’s dry season.

for no 7The western sector of Ajijic has been particularly hard hit over the past four months, with repeated interruptions in water distribution from Pozo 4, the well located in Villa Nova operated by Simapa, the local water and sewage utility.

Regular supply was cut off for ten days back in February when the well’s pump broke down. Many homeowners had to rely on tanker trucks to refill empty roof-top tinacos and underground aljibe (cisterns).

Service was sporadic after the damaged pump was repaired, until the it gave out again in the last week of April.  It was finally restored just after midnight on Tuesday, May 3, following the installation of a new pump and additional maintenance work. Most households in the affected areas are now getting water every other day from late evening until early morning.
