Lakeside Wise Girls program takes shape

The Lake Chapala chapter of Niñas Sabias (Wise Girls), an educational program geared to mentor adolescent girls’ menstrual health, hygiene and female empowerment, is emerging from the groundwork of the local Days for Girls group.

pg13a“We are excited to spread the word that we have a plan to implement the Niñas Sabias/Wise Girls program in every community and every public secondary school at Lakeside,” announced executive committee spokeswoman Jan Quarton.

“Why are we doing this? Although periods are normal and healthy, many girls struggle to manage this monthly occurrence,” she explained.

Quarton pointed to “stark and dismal” statistics: seven percent of Mexican girls and women who menstruate use unsafe materials and 66 percent of girls are unaware of menstruation before their first period, according to UNICEF Mexico.
