Recycling fair set for December 17-18 in Chapala

Chapala’s waterfront  Malecón will be the setting for the Tianguis del Recycle scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, December 17 and 18.

The event will run from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on both dates.

pg11aThe event will open with an ancestral ceremony and rituals intended to integrate the community for participation in earth-friendly practices. Other activities programmed throughout each day will feature an Eco Market with sales exhibits of artisan crafts, sustainable products and vegan gastronomy, along with various hands-on workshops and games related to recycling and ongoing cultural entertainment.

Visitors will also be able to get in on the raffle of assorted prizes by contributing materials suitable for recycling. Such items include discarded containers made of PET or LDPE plastic, aluminum or glass, and Tetra Pak food and drink cartons. All should be previously rinsed clean of food and drink residues, and preferably flattened out with any attached plastic labels removed.

Large electronic devices will not be handled at the fair, but dead batteries  will be accepted. Certain types of clean and flattened cardboard boxes will also be accepted. Consult the Reciclaje Ajijic: Recycle Ajijic Facebook page for further guidance.

Although full details of the fair program had not been nailed down at press time, organizers are planning on plenty of activities to appeal to crowds in attendance. The event is open to the public.

Persons interested in signing up for exhibit space are welcome to send information regarding the products or services they can offer by messages to Cell 332-456-7668 or via messenger to the Tianguis del Recycle Facebook site.

Current recycling projects operating in Chapala and Ajijic are run by citizen volunteers, with some support from local government authorities interested in expanding practices that reduce the load on the waste stream destined for landfill facilities.
