Jocotepec festivities honor El Señor del Monte

Jocotepec is bustling with festive activities these days as the town celebrates its annual tribute to religious patron El Señor del Monte.

pg10aThe fiestas patronales kicked off on the evening of Monday, January 2 with the traditional  reaffirmation of the oath of devotion to the Lord of the Mount, signed by local ecclesiastical and civil authorities.

Allegiance to the figure representing the Crucified Christ stems from common beliefs in the answered prayers of the faithful calling for alleviation from lethal outbreaks of cholera that hit the town in 1833 and 1850, and the Spanish influenza pandemic of 1918. More recently, the Covid-19 pandemic has been added to the list of health crises that put the populace in peril.

The renewal of the Juramento al Señor del Monte vows was inked for the fifth year running by Mayor José Miguel Gómez López, along with Jocotepec parish priest J. Jesús Quiroz Romo and Vicar Carlos Alberto Zúniga Chacón, in a ceremony held during the 7 p.m. celebration of Mass.
