Lakeside activists air environmental beefs in Mexico City

Weary of the lax intervention by federal authorities to attend to environmental and management issues plaguing Lake Chapala and Jalisco as a whole, activist groups from the state converged in the nation’s capital this week to air their grievances directly to pertinent government agencies.

The pro-environment militants gathered in Mexico City on Monday, September 11 to stage protests at the offices of the National Water Commission (Conagua) and the Federal Attorney General’s Office for Environmental Protection (Profepa), going on later to seek support from congressional representatives in the Chamber of Deputies.

Major matters of concern include severe contamination of bodies of water throughout the Lerma-Chapala watershed, particularly the Santiago River and Lake Chapala, and related impacts on surrounding communities. Unhampered illegal invasions and constructions along Lake Chapala’s waterfront federal zone were likewise addressed.
