St. Andrew’s stands out for its good neighbor spirit

St. Andrew’s Anglican Church has literally taken to heart the Biblical precept to “love your neighbor as yourself” by providing a new home to two local organizations that have been displaced from a nearby venue.

The Lake Chapala Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (LCUUF) and the Bare Stage readers’ theater group had been sharing a rental facility on the highway in Riberas del Pilar. On notice that the lease would be terminated at the end of January, they joined forces over recent months to find a new and mutually beneficial location.

By good fortune, or perhaps the will of the Almighty, they found an ideal spot just over a block away, in the warm embrace of St. Andrew’s parishioners.

LCUUF held its last service at Hidalgo 261 on Sunday, January 28. Immediately afterwards they marched the short distance to St. Andrew’s at Calle San Lucas 19. At the start of a  welcome ceremony, enhanced by the soothing melodies of a string trio, the symbolic Unitarian flaming chalice was placed at the center of the altar. As of February 4, regular LCUUF Sunday services will be held at St. Andrew’s, noon to 1 p.m.

For the other part of the three-way collaboration, Roseann Wilshere, Bare Stage’s artistic director, has been overseeing the construction of a small stage at the back of the church and other accommodations for future performances. The premiere show at St. Andrew’s will be “Three Way,” set for Friday to Sunday, March 1 to 3, at 4 p.m., with doors opening and bar service from 3 p.m. Ticket reservations may be arranged by email to This email address is being protected from spambots. Wilshere cites pluses for the move to St. Andrew’s such as the paved parking lot across the street, a lush garden area for pre-show and intermission hobnobbing, more restrooms, and enclosed inside space to filter out exterior traffic noise, all of which likewise benefit Unitarians and their guests.
