Sayaca tradition flourishes

Ajijic’s Sayaca and Sayaco masked dancers spark the carefree and sometimes reckless enjoyment of the town’s Carnaval festivities.

With roots that trace back to the pre-Hispanic era, the customs related to the kooky characters dressed in outlandish costumes are now fully embraced by the youngest generation of villagers.

They’ll be out and about stirring up fun-filled trouble every day from this weekend through Tuesday’s Día de Carnaval parade finale.
