Lakeside moms have their moment in the limelight

Mother’s Day is marked around the world, but Mexico stands out as a country where families truly devote heart and soul to recognizing Mama’s incomparable place as the pillar of the family, celebrating her unconditional love and perpetual self-sacrifice.

pg16Día de las Madres is commemorated across the nation on May 10, regardless of the day of the week on the calendar. Festivities in the Lake Chapala area commonly start long before dawn as beloved mothers are roused from slumber with doorstep musical serenades. As day breaks, skyrockets blast off at local cemeteries to remember matriarchs who have passed on to greener fields.

Later on, Mamá commonly gets a break from her usual daily chores to be wined and dined at a restaurant, or made guest of honor at a home-cooked family feast. The occasion also calls for special gifts, such as floral bouquets, clothing apparel, fashion accessories and perfumes, or practical items that may include new household appliances and kitchen wares, or perhaps the latest in electronic gadgetry.

Many mums will enjoy special programs put on by their offspring at local schools and attend free festivals organized by local authorities at different venues.
