Presidentes municipales (mayors) and regidores (city councilors) were up for election in all 125 Jalisco municipalities on Sunday, June 2, including those who will serve the constituents of Chapala’s nearest neighboring communities over the next three years.
Heriberto García Murillo was reelected for a second term as mayor of Ixtlahuacán de los Membrillos in a landslide victory for the PRI, in coalition with the PAN and PRD. In the preliminary vote count, he defeated Morena candidate Ana Livier Contreras by a margin of more than two-to-one.
Hugo “Bombin” García Vargas, standing for the Morena-Futuro-Hagamos-PVEM-PT coalition, trounced Movimiento Ciudadano (MC) candidate María Dolores “Lolis” López Jara to serve a first term as Jocotepec mayor. According to the preliminary count, he accumulated twice as many votes as his nearest rival.
Looking at probable winners elsewhere in the Lake Chapala region, MC candidates Deysi Angel Hernández and Juan Diego Fonseca Zepeda will govern respectively in Ocotlán and Tuxcueca. Meanwhile, MC candidate Arturo Isrrael Ascencio Gómez won a second consecutive term in Poncitlán.
Poised to take charge under the PAN-PRI-PRD banner are César Molina Sahagún in Jamay, Ricardo Hernández Becerra in La Barca, and José Santiago Coronado Valencia in Tizapán el Alto.
