State dance festival takes in Lakeside performances

The 28th Jalisco International Dance Festival returns July 13 to 20 with 20 separate performances scheduled at more than a dozen metro-area venues, as well as in Ajijic, Lagos de Moreno, Ciudad Guzman and Etzatlan.

The dance festival, which covers all genres, kicks off Sunday, July 13 with simultaneous shows at the Teatro Degollado in Guadalajara (7 p.m.) and the Centro para la Cultura y las Artes de la Ribera in Ajijic (5 p.m.). In Ajijic, Nicola Saucedo Jessica Cortés Alejandra Díaz Renata Garza present “Maternofosis: una caracola y un decantar de cigarras,” while the Mexico City troupe Uroboros  presents “Rats” at the Degollado.

Apart from a couple of free events, the festival’s shows have a token ticket cost of just 30 pesos.  Tickets can be pre-purchased at voyalteatro.com.

The festival includes long and short pieces, workshops, residencies, video dances, performative seminars and conferences.

According to the Jalisco Culture Department, organizers of the event, the curatorial line theme of this year’s festival — “Escenarios Compartidos: Cuerpos en Acción” (Shared Stages: Bodies in Action) — seeks to highlight the relationship between dance and social and political resistance.
