Wetlands sanitation system prevents lake contamination

A wetlands wastewater sanitation system for the lakeshore village of Ojo de Agua was officially launched on Wednesday, September 4, with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony held in the local plaza.

pg1dThe project, sponsored by the Chapala Sunrise Rotary Club, uses a natural biological method to filter contaminants from raw sewage before it drains into Lake Chapala.

Ojo de Agua is a small community of about 500 inhabitants in the municipality of Poncitlán on the outskirts of Mezcala.

Poncitlán Mayor Arturo Ascencio Gómez and Sunrise Rotary President Dr. Oscar Ibarra Unzueta presided over the project kick-off event. Among the villagers present were José Luis Ruiz Cruz, whose indigenous land plot, located two blocks from the plaza, has been designated as the wetlands project site, and Flor Valentín, leader of the town’s water committee, which is composed of local women. Sunrise Rotary project leaders Nicci Beninger and Karl Dyer were also in attendance.
