Mexico’s emblematic November 2 commemoration of Día de los Muertos is still three weeks away, but activities tied to the annual remembrance of the dearly departed are already underway at lakeside.
Chapala’s Inspira Café-Gallery is currently showing a collective exhibit of works by five artists inspired by the Day of the Dead holiday. Enjoy homemade pastries and desserts while viewing art. The gallery is located behind the municipal market at Calle Juárez 575-B, open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Learn crafting techniques for artificial flowers and memorial wreaths used as Día de Muertos decorations at the Centro Cultural Antigua Presidencia, Chapala’s former town hall, Avenida Madero 220. Workshops are offered every Thursday, 4 p.m., through the end of October. Additional classes may be scheduled Tuesdays at 10 a.m.
The Centro para la Cultura y las Artes (CCAR) on the highway in La Floresta has a variety of events on its October calendar.
The Ballet Folklórico Ixtlacateotl celebrates its 10th anniversary on Thursday, October 24, 5:30 p.m., with its show El Cascar de la Huesuda (The Bone-Crusher). Admission at the door is 100 pesos.
