In appreciation of ongoing support for impoverished families in rural villages along Lake Chapala’s north shore, the Poco a Poco San Pedro Itzicán social service organization hosted two thank-you events this month.
A total of 110 guests attended the appreciation gatherings held on November 12 at a private home in Ajijic and on November 16 at the Riviera Alta Clubhouse. Poco a Poco volunteers provided an assortment of gourmet appetizers and drinks for the attendees.
The organization’s community programs encompass a wide range of activities, including teaching plant cultivation techniques, music and traditional dance instruction, English and literacy classes, knitting, sewing, jewelry-making crafts, and hairdressing lessons. It also runs programs for children with special needs and provides healthcare services. These initiatives involve residents of all the surrounding villages and the town of Mezcala.
This spring, the first stage of the San Pedro community center was completed, featuring kitchen and dining facilities that enable the preparation of healthy meals for young children three times per week.
During the appreciation events, long-time volunteer Kari Higgins shared exciting updates. The Federal Electricity Commission has installed an electrical pole, allowing the community center to transition to solar power. Additionally, legal procedures to establish Poco a Poco as a nonprofit entity are progressing rapidly.
