A transportation advocacy NGO, Frente Unido de Colectivos, has launched a campaign demanding that the metro area’s fifth Light Train (Tren Ligero) line extend all the way to Chapala, rather than ending at the city’s airport or the El Salto industrial zone.
The group aims to collect 50,000 signatures for a petition to be sent to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum. They began their campaign last week outside the city center’s Line Three Tren Ligero station, where they reported gathering 500 signatures.

Frente Unido member Raúl Muñoz told Milenio newspaper that the municipalities and communities along the shores of Lake Chapala need another access route into the city, as the only current transportation option is the traffic-clogged Guadalajara-Chapala Highway.
Muñoz also argued that Guadalajara is about 30 years behind in transportation infrastructure for a city of its size.
