Ajijic will be livelier than ever during Day of the Dead festivities

Axixic Vive is the title of the local Pueblo Mágico Día de Muertos celebrations, organized this year under the slogan “The Lake is Our Tradition.” The village will be bustling with dozens of activities from October 30 through November 2. 

 

Program highlights

 

Thursday, October 30:

• Painting exhibit “Devotion, Tradition and Symbolism,” 5 p.m., Centro Cultural Ajijic.

 

Friday, October 31:

Augurios de medianoche (Midnight Omens), award-wining theatrical show, 5 p.m., CCAR, La Floresta.

 

Saturday, November 1: Día de los Angelitos

• Little Angels Parade to the plaza, 5 p.m. from Seis Esquinas via Ocampo-Constitución, Marcos Castellanos and Pasillo del Arte.

At the Plaza:

• Children’s literary workshops, “Letras para Volar” (Words to Fly), 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

• Gastronomic Pavilion opening by Casa Axixic, 3 p.m.

• Performance by child singer Cosette, 5 p.m.

• Opening of “Memories of Ajijic” photo exhibit, 6 p.m.

• Children’s movie screening, 7 p.m.

 

Sunday, November 2: Día de Muertos

At the Plaza:

• Children’s reading workshops “Letras para Volar,” 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

• Opening of exhibition of offerings, altars and tapestries, 2 p.m.

• Ongoing artistic performances, 2 to 9 p.m., including “Catrina Wedding” performance, 5:30 p.m., Capilla del Rosario atrium.

On the Colón-Morelos Pedestrian Corridor:

• Exhibition of offerings and altars, 2 to 10 p.m.

• Performance of “Lament for the Dead,” 6 to 9 p.m.

• Performance of  “Farewell to the Little Angel,” 7 to 7:30 p.m.

  Performance of “The Peasant’s Last Journey,” 8:30 to 9 p.m.

On the Malecón:

• The Catrinas and Catrines parade starts at 5 p.m., via Ocampo and Morelos, ending at the Malecón for the Couples Waltz.

• Inauguration of the community altar by the Lake Chapala Society, 2 p.m.

• Xoloitzcuintle dog costume contest “Camino al Mictlán,” 3:30 p.m.

• Various artistic performances, 4 to 8 p.m.

• Canoe parade “To Eternity,” 5:30 p.m., with viewing from the boardwalk between the pier and the Ajijic letters.

• Offering to the Lake, 6:30 p.m.

• The “Light to Heaven” launching of globo paper balloons, 9:30 p.m.
