Lakeside rambunctious Carnaval (Mardi Gras) season is just around the corner as Chapala warms up for its most popular annual celebration and Ajijic gears up for its own traditional festivities.
While Chapala authorities have not yet released the complete Carnaval 2026 program, this week it was announced that activities will run from February 12 through 17. The location of the Carnaval headquarters, most often situated at La Cristianía Park, along with this year’s concert schedule, has not been disclosed so far.
Confirmed events include the February 11 popular election of El Rey de Alegría, Monarch of Mardi Gras Mayhem; the traditional opening day Entierro del Mal Humor (burial of bad humor) dance parade and ceremony, February 12, starting at 6:30 p.m.; and the main street Carnaval parade, February 15, from 10 a.m.
Schools, businesses and organizations interested in joining the Entierro cortege should contact the Instituto de la Juventud by WhatsApp 332-455-2200 for details. Sign-ups for the February 15 parade are channeled to the Dirreción de Turismo, WhatsApp 378-121-1172.
